What is an Educated Workforce?

Educated workers are those who have acquired a formal education and any necessary certifications in order to gain easier entrance into the workforce. This is required due to the fact that some fields require a high level of knowledge and experience in order to be officially employed as a practitioner within that field. Some examples of educated workers include professions such as doctors, notaries, architects, scientists and many more.

It is important to understand that an educated workforce is different from a trained workforce. Both types of staff are equally seen based on their abilities, but have different definitions. An educated workforce is required to take on a formal education such as through acquiring specific degrees through attending university; a trained workforce, on the other hand, is not required to pursue this process. In general, trained workers are able to master their skills by taking on a non-formal education such as training programs or courses. Examples of trained workers include bus drivers, baristas, tailors, photographers, tour guides, and many more.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Hiring an Educated Workforce

Educated workers can more easily find work after finishing school, often being considered as inexperienced in many cases. Even so, many companies are looking for educated workers who have freshly graduated.

When employing a workforce such as this one, some advantages and disadvantages are worth taking into consideration.

  • Profit

Educated workers who have no experience or have just entered the world of work are relatively cheaper. This is because they do not have the power to bid a higher price for the skills they have. Inexperienced workers are also easy to find so companies will be more free to choose workers who are considered to meet the requirements and have the potential to be able to participate in advancing the company. An inexperienced educated workforce is easier to form and direct in accordance with company goals.

  • Deficiency

Companies must plan certain training programs for their educated workers who are inexperienced so that they are truly skilled and mastered in their fields. The company must prepare a number of budgets to finance the planned training program. To make educated workers experienced in their fields, the company takes a long time. Usually an educated workforce will become more skilled in their skills after they have worked for several years.

Example of an educated workforce

There are many examples of educated professionals. They are able to learn new skills and gain valuable knowledge related to certain fields through engaging a formal education. Here are some examples of workers who are trained as educated professional.

  • Teacher

Elementary, middle, and high school teachers must at least have a bachelor’s degree. To become a teacher, one must be prepared to take an active participation in the education of a wide variety of students, from youngsters to professionals in training. This can be in the form of being employed by a university, high school, or even a company in certain circumstances.

  • Lecturer

Lecturers are also examples of highly educated professionals. At the very least, such professionals must have gained academic qualifications measuring up to a minimum level of S2 (Master).

  • Doctor

Firstly, prospective doctors must obtain a medical degree. In addition, in Indonesia, they also have to take part in the Koas program, which entails directly applying their trade within a hospital for at least 2 years.

Within today’s highly digitized world, web developers are professionals who have been in wide demand. This is also an example of an educated workforce because generally they will learn various sciences about web programming, data structures, computer architecture, and database management in college. Although currently many web developers are studying knowledge related to developing their own website, such as by participating in a coding bootcamp, generally when recruiting web developer workers, companies will look for informatics engineering graduates.

  • Web designer

Just like web developers, web designers are also educated workers who are able to master their profession via a non-formal education. But usually, the company will be the one to determine the factors in which the prospective worker should fulfill in terms of their education. Therefore, many times, companies require their web designers to hold a formal degree within a relevant field, however, there are plenty of cases where the requirements can simply include a certificate or even past experience being enough.

  • Notary

Notaries need a higher education in order to master their skills. They must pass a bachelor’s degree in law and then continue with a master’s degree majoring in notary.

  • Civil Servants

The next example of an educated workforce is a Civil Servant, or PNS in Indonesia. This profession holds quite a lot of esteem with many people because it promises very stable financial conditions and reliable retirement benefits. To participate within the selection process to become a civil servant, there are several requirements that must be first met. One of them is to become a college graduate possessing a major that is in accordance with the enterprise being applied for.
