- Willingness to be independent
Remote work as a strategy is, by its very definition, an independently run mode of work. Because employees won’t be required to have a manager breathing down their neck every 2 minutes, one can mistake this as a form of freedom. And in many cases, for workers who are able to leverage this opportunity to work harder, it certainly is a freedom. However, in some cases, workers misinterpret this situation as a ticket to do whatever they want, whenever they feel like. Of course, these types of “workers” are usually the ones who are in most need of a higher-up babysitting them throughout the day, and making sure they submit their “homework” on time. Indeed, the ability to work without supervision is such a key element within a successful remote work strategy. This is solely due to the fact that all workers will be employed from the comfort of their own homes (this is the appropriate location in most cases). Therefore, there will be many distractions and no one to call you out if you indulge in them. This is why independence is such a valued trait within such strategies.

- Good communication skills
Communicating face to face is hard enough! Just imagine if there was only a little text box in which to voice your concerns to the whole company! Oh wait… you don’t have to imagine such a scenario, it already exists. It’s called remote work! Well, that might be a little bit of an exaggeration, as remote work strategies often employ hybrid methods of communication, including schedules that have employees meet up face to face from time to time. However, it is a fundamental skill to be able to enunciate your problems and demands, as within remote working strategies, mostly you will be working on a distance basis. If miscommunication is a serious cause of frustration within an office based work strategy, just imagine how frustrating it will be on a remote working basis. Hint: it will be quite nerve wracking. Therefore, you might need to up your writing game; maybe take a couple classes in creative or technical writing, for example. The point remains, within distance based strategies; you will be compelled to make your point to people who are potentially miles away. Be prepared to type… a lot!

- The Ability to use Digital Equipment
In some cases, employers will not be offering digital equipment for all employees who are engaged in a remote work strategy. Indeed, in these cases, workers will be required to purchase the appropriate digital tools required for the job. In almost all cases, a simple laptop and the ability to use it competently is all that is required. However, there are examples of employers who will need you to purchase a variety of other digital equipment, as well as be able to operate them fluently. These can include certain specialized software, a headset or a specific brand of laptop, such as a Mac or a PC.

A majority of work and communication is done through online means. Therefore, many remote work jobs will require workers to have a working knowledge of not just the internet, but also anti-virus software and procedures. If you decide to work outside your home, such as at a local java joint, you should have a password-protected hotspot instead of using free, unsecured Wi-Fi.
